Boyd Deering grew up in Lafayette, Tennessee the son to JV Bud and JoAnne Deering. His father was the owner of the music club the Picking Post and so Boyd was exposed to a variety of music styles at an early age. By age ten he was interested in making his own music and his father taught him some popular fiddle tunes on the mandolin. He lived on a family farm and, like others living in similar homes from there to Plano real estate, would spend most of his time at home working with farm machinery, hauling hay, raising a garden and doing other chores around the house. But he devoted what seemed like every minute outside of that to practicing music.

Deering's passion for stringed instruments grew quickly and soon he was adding acoustic guitar and fiddle to his repertoire. By age fifteen he was teaching guitar at the music school in town and was a member of the house band at his father's club on weekends.
